Story behind the song
Yes, it's true. I was literally in a public bathroom when the idea for this hit me. So I put together my thoughts after I flushed (Yes, I washed my hands!) and headed back home to write the song as a playful complaint to my muse, who seems to love teasing me as much as she loves inspiring me.
Lyrics
Hey, Muse, What the hell? Hey Muse, What the hell? Hey Muse, What the hell? You always gotta find me at the worsest times! It seems to happen when I least expect So I just gotta ask, what the heck? She puts a notion in the back o' my head You trynna drive me crazy or somethin'? (Refrain) I'm try'n to get my life in order and I suddn'ly find a pen inside my hand I'm try'n to capture this before it's lost A momentary glimpse of beauty and inspiration, fleeting and nebulous if I do not move immediately before I miss out on the... Oh, dammit. Refrain Why can't you hit me when it's more convenient? Like when it works for both of us? No, really, I know that chicks dig it, But a first date is really NOT the best opportunity. Refrain Can't you just wait until I'm done here? I mean, really. I'm trying to take a crap. The bathroom is NOT the place for genius to strike. I mean, listen to this. (Schmaltzy arpeggio on G) "A cloud once cried, because it could not produce rain. These flowers were watered by its tears." Now, that's very pretty, but how am I going to explain when someone asks me how I came up with THAT line? Refrain X2
