Story behind the song
Corky Bernard did an amazing job with the lyrics on this one. I asked if I could write the music for it minutes after I read them. I thought he did a great job of painting the despair someone in this situation would feel. I didn't actually intend on making it into a rock song, I pictured something a bit more melancholy. But you never know which way your spirit will take you do you?
Lyrics
He has not left these cold, block walls since nineteen, eighty-three; doing the time for another's crime and mistaken identity. Forensic science has improved. DNA has shown the way. At last they know, and they're letting him go at 12:00 o'clock today. (CHORUS) Eighteen years without the sunshine. Eighteen years without the rain. Eighteen years of salty tears and his silent cries of pain..... The warden watches from his window as the man shuffles through the gate. He could sue the state for millions and surely win his case. But the warden has statistics to shield him from this fear. A souless husk, climbs on the bus and he'll be dead within the year. (CHORUS/END) Eighteen years without the sunshine. Eighteen years without the rain. Eighteen long years of salty tears and his silent cries of pain..... silent cries of pain.
